A Sporting Chance- National Learning Network Tralee

E-mail Print PDF

The Sporting Chance programme at National Learning Network Tralee has been in existence as a pilot project since August 2007. The programme is aimed towards providing people with disabilities with the qualifications and skills required to pursue a career in the sports and leisure industry or to progress to third level education. We are currently in the process of mainstreaming the programme and ensuring that this opportunity remains available on a long term basis and we are now accepting applications from any interested parties.

To date, the course has proven to be hugely successful, with participants (who have attended from throughout Ireland) progressing to a wide range of careers including as a Soccer Coach, Swim Teacher, Gym Instructor, Go for Life Instructor and Sports Masseur. In addition, the course has proven to be a gateway to third level education, with seven students progressing to sport and leisure courses in Waterford and Tralee.

Sporting Chance covers a wide range of modules and qualifications which include ITEC Diplomas in Gym Instruction and Sports Massage, National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, Swim Teaching, Coaching Qualifications in a variety of sports, and a range of FETAC certification at levels 4 and 5. There is also a very strong practical element where participants have an opportunity to develop their coaching and instructional skills in a variety of sports and exercise classes.

Sporting Chance caters for people of all ages and disabilities and provides an individual action planning approach, thus ensuring the course is tailored towards the specific needs of each individual. Many people may never have had an opportunity to attend third level education, or may have been unsure as to whether further education was for them. Therefore, this is a fantastic opportunity to gain the qualifications and skills and pursue a career in the sport and leisure industry.
