The newly formed Shannonside Rangers Powerchair Football team more than held their own in the Association of Irish Powerchair Football (AIPF) National Shield which took place on Saturday 17th of July in the University of Limerick Arena.
In two tight competitions the Kingdom Rebels teams took home both cup and shield. Ronan Kildea from Shannonside Rangers was awarded player of the shield. Ronan had an influence on all parts of the Shannonside rangers play from scoring goals to countless goal line clearances.
Ciarán Nesbitt who plays for St. Joeys outlines the importance of Powerchair football to him “Never did I think I would play one of my most favourite sports in the world, at the tender age of thirty-seven! Up to now sport was not for me, but this is a game you can’t help but be motivated by and enjoy. Even those who never liked or enjoyed the art form that is football, are
finding the football bug has burrowed under their skin and their enthusiasm cannot be measured.”
Liam Mc Donough, Sports Inclusion Disability Officer for Limerick City and County Sports Partnership highlights the achievement of the Shannonside Rangers “the team did very well in their first competition playing against teams that have been playing for over two years and this bodes well for the future of Powerchair Football on Shannonside. This new club are on the lookout for new players, coaches and volunteers. Coaches or volunteers do not need to be football coaches or have experience of working with people with a physical disability but enthusiasm is a must. Training will be provided.”
After a short break all the teams will start back into training for the league which will restart in September. If you want more information on the Shannonside Rangers PFC contact Liam Mc Donough, Sports Inclusion Disability Officer, Limerick City Sports Partnership, 087 1798199 or
